In short

What does Gardenscape mean by pondless waterfalls?

A waterfall and stream with no open pool: the sound and movement of water, safe around children.

A waterfall with no open water

A pondless waterfall gives you all the sound and movement of running water, a waterfall and stream tumbling over rock, with no open pool of standing water. The water disappears into a hidden, gravel-filled reservoir below ground and is pumped back up to run again. It is one of the most popular water features we build, and for good reason.

Safe, and low maintenance

Because there is no open water, a pondless waterfall is safe around young children and pets, which makes it the water feature of choice for family gardens. It is also low-maintenance: there is no large body of water to balance, just a clean, recirculating system that runs when you want it and can be switched off when you do not.

How it is built

The craft is in the things you do not see: sizing the reservoir to hold enough water, matching the pump and flow rate to the height and the look you want, and placing the rock so the water runs and sounds right rather than trickling down a pile of stones. We build it as a proper recirculating system, concealed and reliable.

Designed into the garden

A pondless waterfall can be a naturalistic rock cascade or a cleaner, more contemporary feature, designed to sit with the planting and the wider garden. Arrange a consultation and we will design one to suit your space.

Common questions

Common questions

  • Yes, it is one of the safest water features there is, because there is no open standing water. The water recirculates into a gravel reservoir below ground, so you get the sound and movement without the risk.

  • Very little. There is no large body of water to balance, just a clean recirculating system. It runs when you want it and can be switched off when you do not.

  • It runs down into a hidden, gravel-filled reservoir below ground and is pumped back up to run again. The reservoir and pump are sized and concealed so the feature runs reliably and looks natural.

  • Either. A pondless waterfall can be a naturalistic rock cascade or a cleaner contemporary design. We design it to sit with your planting and the wider garden.
