A lawn is only as good as the ground under it

A good lawn looks simple and is anything but. The difference between a lawn that knits into a thick, even sward and one that goes patchy, mossy and waterlogged is almost entirely in the preparation. We lay quality turf on properly prepared and drained ground, with the groundwork cheaper firms skip, so the lawn establishes well and stays good.

Preparation and drainage first

Before any turf goes down we sort the ground: clearing and levelling, dealing with drainage where the ground holds water, and preparing a firm, fine, fertile seedbed for the turf to root into. On the heavy clay of the vale around Chippenham drainage is the make-or-break detail, because a lawn sitting on wet, compacted ground will struggle however good the turf. We prepare for the ground we are on.

Quality turf, laid and levelled properly

We use good-grade turf suited to how the lawn will be used, whether that is a hard-wearing family lawn or a finer ornamental sward, and lay it on accurate levels with tight, staggered joints so it knits into one surface. Laid well onto prepared ground, turf roots in quickly and gives you a usable lawn far sooner than seed.
