What is a Certified Aquascape Contractor, and why does it matter?
A contractor trained and certified by Aquascape to build their ecosystem ponds to a set standard. Few hold it, and it is the difference between a balanced, low-maintenance pond and a hole with a pump.
In short
A Certified Aquascape Contractor is a landscaper trained and certified by Aquascape, the company behind the ecosystem pond system, to design and build their ponds to a defined standard. The certification covers building a pond as a balanced, living system, with the filtration, circulation, rock and planting working together, so it stays clean and clear with little maintenance and no chemicals. Relatively few contractors in the UK hold it. It matters because a natural or ecosystem pond lives or dies on whether those elements are balanced correctly, which is exactly what the certification is about.
Anyone can dig a hole and drop in a liner. The difference between that and a pond that stays clean and clear for years is whether it is built as a balanced ecosystem, where the filtration, circulation, rock and gravel, and planting all do their job together. That balance is the whole skill, and it is what the Aquascape certification trains and tests.
As a Certified Aquascape Contractor, the work is built to that system rather than improvised. In practice that means a pond designed to look after itself: no chemicals, far less maintenance, and water that stays healthy because the biology is doing the work, not a bank of mechanical kit.
It is also a useful signal when you are choosing who to trust with a serious piece of work. A natural pond or an ecosystem pond is a significant investment, and the certification is independent evidence that it will be built to a recognised standard.
